Monumen Bandung Lautan Api

The Bandung Sea of Fire Monument was created by one of Indonesia’s renowned artists Sunaryo. This monument stood on an imposing height of 45 meters, shaped like a raging fire and colored in bronze. During the fight to keep Indonesia’s independence, Bandung City was divided into two segregated areas, one half was occupied by the enemy and their allies, while the people of Bandung defended the other half. Later, all citizens chose to evacuate to a nearby city, leaving the area. Then in March 1946, the city was torched, fire savagely ate every building and resources that the city had. This decision was made to avoid the enemy gaining advantage from the city’s strategic location and valuable resources. The execution was led by Muhammad Toha, who died in the event.
