Monumen Kemenangan Perjuangan 27 Desember 1949
Although Indonesia declared its independence on August 17, 1945, the Dutch didn’t directly retract for a few years after that. They finally declared Indonesia’s sovereignty on December 27, 1949. This monument serves as a memorial and reminder of the hard fight the people of Indonesia went through to keep their independence. Initiated by the military branch in Medan, this monument was designed by Sekar Gunung, the artist who also created and designed the Monument of General Ahmad Yani. There are two elements of the monument, a big flare of fire made of concrete and a massive bamboo pillar in the background. On the base of the monument, was written a complete information of the why and who of this monument. The artist described that parts of the monuments represented December 27, 1949, symbolically. First, the flare sculpture was built of a total of 27 flames and a 7 meter height. 27 representing the date and 7 representing Indonesian Army’s Sapta Marga or Seven Principle. The bamboo pillar in the back was composed of 49 pieces of bamboo in a row with 17 meter in height; this represents the year 1949 and the date August 17. Last part is the stairs leading up to the monument was intentionally made with 12 steps, representing the month of December.
