Monumen Melati

Melati Monument was officiated on December 17, 1982 by Indonesian Army’s General Poniman. It was placed in front of Brawijaya Museum. The monument’s shape was in the form of two main pillars as high as 7 meter symbolizing two brigades of the Tentara Keamanan Rakyat (People’s Security Army). This pillar was connected to a plaque in front of the inscription of ‘Idjen Boulevard’ with ornaments on either side, this ornament was the symbol of ‘Hongaarse Krul’ which was used by students. On the other side of the pillar there was a relief showing the struggle against the invaders. At the top of the pillar, there was a jasmine flower, symbol of the Suropati VII Division Army School. It has 11 petals made of bronze, the number symbolizing November, the month when the Suropati Cadet School was established. It was called Cadet School, taken from “cadet,” the term that was used in Malang for the students.

This monument was a form of appreciation for the emergency school at the beginning of TKR formation, which was the forerunner of TNI (Indonesian Army) today. At the Malang Cadet School, the term ‘Opsir’ or officers was replaced with ’Perwira’ and the term ‘Kadet’ or cadets was replaced with ‘Taruna’, which were later recognized nationally. In its history, the Suropati Cadet School was merged with the Yogyakarta Military Academy. Most of the cadets entered Kompi Z, many of whom died in battles against the Dutch in various areas around Yogyakarta.

TNI Poniman. Monumen ini terletak di jalur hijau Jl. Ijen no. 18 tepat di depan Museum Brawijaya.
