Monumen Perjuangan Angkatan 66

This monument has a rectangle shape and is divided into two parts, the base and the top. The bottom half of the monument conceived of four panels of concrete silver-painted reliefs, depicting the heinous tragedy of communist genocide in Indonesia that occured from 1965 to 1966. Three of the panels showed the major events that happened in Medan and one panel displays a list of victim names and the text of Supersemar (Surat Perintah Sebelas Maret) or the Order of Eleventh March. Some scenes that represent the major events were violent and vulgar, such as stabbing, beating, and attacks using violent weapons. The humans depicted in the reliefs were made in simplified form with their faces showing limited expressions. This simplification in result toned down the horrible events the relief displays. The top half of the monument is smaller in size. On two of its sides are the Garuda symbol and the text of five elements of Pancasila, one side is a portrait relief of Indonesia’s seven influential military commanders who were killed in the tragedy, and the other is a big concrete clock. When IPAA team observed the location, the clock was no longer functioning.

Tugu dalam monumen ini terdiri dua bagian, yaitu relief dengan masing-masing 4 sisi dan bagian puncak, monumen ini diwarnai dengan cat silver dan cat hitam sebagai detail. Bentuk dasar tugu adalah persegi bertumpuk, keempat sisinya menghadap ke arah tenggara, barat daya, barat laut, dan timur laut. Relief pada bagian bawah tugu menggambarkan berbagai peristiwa berdarah yang terjadi selama tahun 1965-1966. Adegan pada relief cukup sadis dan vulgar namun tereduksi dengan bentuk manusia yang tidak realis, terstilasi dengan bentuk cenderung seperti kartun seperti dalam kebanyakan relief yang ditemukan di Medan. Selain penggambaran peristiwa, pada monumen juga tercantum nama-nama dari beberapa laskar pemuda yang menjadi korban peristiwa ’65 dan Surat Perintah 11 Maret. Pada puncak monumen terdapat sebuah jam yang sudah tidak berfungsi, lambang Garuda, kelima sila Pancasila, dan wajah tujuh pahlawan revolusi yang juga menjadi korban.
