Patung Paris van East Java

On Veterans Street, in front of the gate of Brawijaya University, stood a Cube Sculpture named “Paris van East Java”. It was a configuration of a cube base and an inclined rotating cube. Installed on January 12, 2016, the sculpture was one of the sculptures in the Science Thematic Park along the green line of Veteran Street.

On the bottom side of the cube were inscribed the words of “Paris van East Java”, “City of Education”, “Malang Kipa Ilakes” and “Beautiful Malang”. “Paris van East Java” was similar to a term once used by the Dutch colonialist. It was used as a symbolic prayer so that Veteran Street could become like the city of Paris. “City of Education” represents one of Malang City’s titles. The term “Malang Kipa Ilakes” was the words ‘Malang Apik Sekali’ in reversed letters; this reversed letters style was once viral across various social media and became known as Malang’s uniqueness. The color blue was used as the base color, picked up from Arema’s characteristic color.

On the rotating cube, a binary code language was written on all of its sides, which according to the Chief of the Sanitation and Park Service (DKP), Erik Setyo Santoso, forms a complete sentence and could be understood if an observer understands binary code.

Di Jl. Veteran tepatnya di depan gerbang Universitas Brawijaya, terdapat patung berbentuk kubus dengan nama “Paris van East Java”. Terdiri dari kubus pondasi dan kubus miring yang dapat berputar. Patung ini hadir di ruang publik sejak tanggal 12 Januari 2016. Patung ini merupakan salah satu patung publik di dalam taman tematik ilmu pengetahuan sepanjang jalur hijau Jl. Veteran.

Pada bawah kubus terdapat tulisan “Paris of East Java”, “Kota Pendidikan”, “Malang Kipa Ilakes” dan “Beautiful Malang”. ‘Paris of East Java’ mengingatkan kembali kepada sebutan yang pernah disematkan Belanda di masa lalu sekaligus harapan agar Jl. Veteran bisa seperti kota Paris. “Kota Pendidikan” adalah gelar Kota Malang. Istilah ‘Ngalam Kipa’ sendiri pernah diramaikan netizen terkait city branding. Patung ini menggunakan warna biru sebagai warna dasar “Paris van East Java” yang ikonik dengan warna Arema Malang.

Pada kubus yang berputar tertera deretan kode biner di segala sisi kubus. Kepala Dinas Kebersihan dan Pertamanan (DKP), Erik Setyo Santoso, mengatakan bahwa kombinasi angka nol dan satu ini memiliki arti tersendiri jika warga yang melihat mengerti kode biner.
