Tugu Apollo (Tugu Pertempuran Medan Area)

The Battle of Medan Area was a war to maintain the new independence status of Indonesia in the area around Medan and its neighboring cities. On October 9, 1945, NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration) and its allies attacked the city. It was so ferocious that the local army and civilians who fought were pushed to the city of Pematang Siantar, 50 miles from the Medan. This attack caused many deaths and ate a lot of victims. This monument was made to commemorate this fight. In shape, it was quite similar to the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta, like a candle on its holder, but with no flame as the crown of the monument. The monument stood approximately 11 meters in height and 5 meters base diameter. Adorning the edge of the base were five panels of long reliefs depicting the battle that lasted 5 years from 1945 to 1949; it ended when finally the Dutch accepted the independence and sovereignty of Indonesia on December 27, 1949. The color of the monument is white, with a zig-zag motif on its body. The reliefs were painted the color of gold, but has since darkened and now it seemed like brass. From afar, the reliefs are not visible because of the trees that surround the site of the monument.

Pertempuran Medan Area merupakan peristiwa perjuangan rakyat Medan melawan sekutu, pertempuran yang terjadi pada tanggal 9 Oktober 1945 ketika tentara sekutu dan NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration atau Pemerintahan Sipil Hindia Belanda) menyerbu Kota Medan dan memukul mundur pasukan Indonesia hingga ke Pematang Siantar. Peristiwa penyerangan ini memakan banyak sekali korban. Tinggi tugu adalah sekitar 11 meter, berbentuk meruncing ke atas dan berwarna putih, seperti Monumen Nasional di Jakarta namun tanpa puncak api emas di atasnya. Pada bagian dasar tugu terdapat 5 bagian relief. Adegan yang digambarkan dalam masing-masing relief adalah perjuangan dari tahun ke tahun secara berturut dari 1945 sampai pernyataan kedaulatan Indonesia oleh Belanda pada tahun 1949. Relief diwarnai dengan cat emas. Tugu dikelilingi dengan pohon, sehingga dari jauh relief tidak begitu tampak.
